This book is unique among the vast literature on World War I in that it is a work of descriptive history that is integrated into an analysis of military strategy. The form of warfare changed radically and unexpectedly in 1914, and as a result large armies became deadlocked and suffered disastrous losses in their attempts to advance from their lines of primitive trenches. This book explains this change and the underlying reasons for it, through the detailed history of 4,000 men, a brigade of highly-trained British Regular soldiers who were engaged in the fighting from the beginning of the war. It is based on an extremely wide range of empirical material: unpublished and published primary sources as well as a battery of secondary material, much of which is little known. The book is written in a non-technical style that will appeal to general readers, although it does not sacrifice intellectual rigor in this process.
