Andrea A. Lunsford's The St. Martin's Handbook, ISBN 9780312602925 sets out to encourage students to make smarter choices in their own personal writings which will, in turn, influence the decisions they make in their academic and professional writings. In a time where Lunsford recognizes that students are writing more now than ever, this text serves as an effective instructional tool for teaching students how to effectively write across any genre or for any purpose. The expertise and passion for writing are evident in Andrea A. Lunsford's background. Currently she is Louise Hewlett Nixon Professor of English and director of the Program in Writing and Rhetoric at Stanford University and also teaches at the Bread Loaf School of English. She has served as chair of the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) and has also won the major publication awards in both the CCCC and MLA. Lunsford has also authored and co-authored several other successful texts including Easy Writer, The Everyday Writer, The Presence of Others, Everything's an Argument, as well as Everything's an Argument with Readings. Lunsford has strategically organized The St. Martin's Handbook into 12 succinct parts, each devoted to different aspects or purposes for writing. Part 1 serves as an introduction to 'The Art and Craft of Writing' followed by part 2 with chapters devoted to 'Critical Thinking and Argument.' Part 3 delves into 'Research and Documentation' while part 4 discusses 'Print, Electronic and Other Media' and part 5 looks at the use of 'Effective Language.' Many aspects of sentence formation and correction are explored in the next sections including 'Sentence Grammar' which is addressed in part 6, 'Sentence Clarity' found in part 7, and 'Sentence Style' in part 8. The next sections teach some of writing's foundational principles such as the proper use of 'Punctuation' in part 9 and 'Mechanics' in part 10. This text is concluded with part 11 devoted to providing help 'For Multilingual Writers' and part 12 lending itself to 'Academic and Professional Writing.'
