This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated.1896 Excerpt: ... general plane described by the surface is, perhaps, a trine less, say 8 degrees. There is only a slight non-conformity at the eastern dyke and the general plane is continued up to the primary or main eastern lode. Between that lode and the axis of the mountain, the incline is much greater. This shows a true fissure into which the lode material was interposed. The vein matter was probably injected from beneath by means of hydrostatic pressure, exerted from the direction of the main axis, the source of supply being high to afford this pressure. The injecting force probably acting along the incline described by the strata that were affected by the uplift, the lines of the injection were, no doubt, below all stratified rocks. Sandstone Constitntes the Matrix. The sandstone that constitutes the general matrix of the "country rock" is so soft and porous that all of the vein matter that lies near the surface rapidly oxidizes and its sulphur, in the form of sulphurous acid, is freed and sinks to the lower levels, there to form crystalized sulphides of gold or other metals that may have been encountered on the way down. The oxidized "honey comb" quartz remains with its vast supply of free gold that erosion is gradually freeing and carrying down the slopes to feed the placers below. The great sinus or trough that affords a point or rather a line of rest for these enormous placer deposits is the bed of the Galisteo river. This river is distant from four to ten miles from the above described main eastern lode and in still closer proximity to the intermediate dry placers, all of which are from hundreds to thousands of feet higher than the river, although this deposit extends in more or less richness down to the banks of the river. Another fact is worthy of remark, the u...
