Not illustrated. 1982 Excerpt: ...types, the adoption of larger capacity trucks and electric shovels, improvement in concentrator operations, and limited use of in-place mining. Portable crushers and conveyor haulage systems are expected to be used more extensively in open-pit mines. In underground mining, greater diffusion of trackless vehicles for ore and waste transport, and improved conveyorization have been sources of labor savings. A description of major innovations in copper ore mining, their labor implications, and prospects for diffusion are presented in the text that follows and are summarized in table 5. Table 5. Major technology changes In copper ore mining Technology Improved drilling and blasting equipment and methods Loading and hauling equipment of greater capacity and complexity Improved ore processing technology In-place mining Description Rotary drills are the most widely used method of drilling the holes in which explosives are placed. Drill capacity has increased, and newer models feature automatic control. Innovative methods of placing and timing the charges improve rock fragmentation and reduce secondary drilling and blasting. In ore and waste handling, new electric shovels of higher capacity and featuring improved controls are being introduced. Trucks of larger capacity are displacing rail haulage in the transport of ore and waste. In open-pit mining, portable crushers and improved conveyor systems also are being deployed. In underground mines, dieselpowered load-haul-dump (LHD) vehicles, which do not operate on tracks and are thus more mobile, are displacing conventional equipment. Ore processing equipment of increased capacity, improved grinding processes, refinements in equipment design, and more extensive control instrumentation and computers are improving effici...
