Kathleen T. McWhorter presents students with a grand introductory resource in her textbook Successful College Writing with 2009 MLA and 2010 APA Updates, ISBN 9780312667740. This text offers expansive coverage of strategies for critical reading, relatable instruction on studying and tips for experiencing success in college, as well as step-by-step methods for writing and research. A myriad of effective instructional tools are integrated in this text including graphic organizers, revision flowcharts, as well as other visual resources to help students evaluate texts and create their own essays. Kathleen T. McWhorter currently serves as professor emerita of humanities and former director of the Learning Skills Center at Niagara County Community College. She is also a seasoned writer authoring numerous books on reading and writing skills for developmental students, including The Writer's Selections, Fifth Edition, Academic Reading, Sixth Edition, Efficient and Flexible Reading, Active Reading Skills, and Reading Across the Disciplines: College Reading And Beyond as well as a composition reader, Seeing the Pattern: Readings for Successful Writing. The contents of Successful College Writing with 2009 MLA and 2010 APA Updates are organized across six sections and 24 chapters. Part 1 begins with an introduction entitled 'Academic Quick Start.' Chapters within this section provide students with information on succeeding and writing in college, as well as reading and writing about text. Part 2 presents coverage of 'Strategies for Writing Essays' with discussion of the different steps of the writing process including prewriting, developing and supporting a thesis, drafting, writing effective paragraphs, revising, and editing.
