There is such a high level of violence in Guyanese society that not only are Guyanese perturbed by it, but many are unable to offer a coherent explanation for it. So much so that one social commentator explains it as “demons stalking the land.” With the intense violence we are witnessing the decay of Guyanese society. The study categorizes the various types of violence in the society and argues that the current intense violence has its origin in structural (state) violence, and is justified by spiritual violence in that cultural loyalty asserts that racism, and violence against the enemy, are virtues. Some of the deaths are interpreted as ritual sacrifice in that scapegoats are found to pin the blame for the social and economic ills of the nation. The intense violence is also a cause for concern in that it indicates that Guyana is on the road to mass violence. Some of the signs are abject poverty for many, the normalizing of dishonesty, intense everyday violence, death squads and an armed resistance movement. The book has been written in the hope that a recognition and understanding of the violence may interrupt the process and thereby avert a catastrophe.
