Students taking an introductory course to psychology will find Psychology, Fifth Edition (ISBN 9781429201438) by Don H. Hockenbury and Sandra E. Hockenbury an ideal textbook for one-semester courses. The authors do not only explain the concepts of psychology but also allow students to link what they have learned to real-life cases and scenarios. The best-selling Psychology, Fifth Edition starts off with an introduction and a discussion of the common research methods, then proceeds to neuroscience and behavior, sensation and perception, consciousness and its variations, as well as learning and memory. More advanced students and majors can proceed to the intermediate chapters on thinking, language and intelligence, motivation and emotion, lifespan development, gender and sexuality, personality, and social psychology. This book provides a deeper look at stress, health and coping, as well as psychological disorders and its cures. The appendix is extremely useful, providing additional statistics as well as information on industrial and organizational psychology. Throughout the book, the authors provide insights on science versus pseudoscience, culture on human behavior, and application. Beginners in the field and even those taking psychology as an elective will not be overwhelmed by jargon. One of the best things about Hockenbury and Hockenbury's Psychology, 5th Edition, is that it encourages students to apply what they have learned not just in the classroom but in everyday life. Those interested in self study will find the accompanying study guide very useful. Both authors are professors at Tulsa Community College. This edition is now out of print, but can be rented.
