Dennis Coon and John O. Mitterer join forces to provide students with a helpful resource in their textbook entitled Psychology: A Journey, ISBN 9780495811701. This text presents the foundational principles of psychology in an interesting and easy-to-understand fashion as well as how psychology relates to the difficulties people face on a daily basis. The incorporation of the SQ4R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Reflect, and Review) active learning system serves as a useful tool to help students with their studies while coverage of the various realms of psychology are presented throughout the chapters. The leading expert of this writing team is that of Dennis Coon. Receiving his PhD in social psychology from the University of Arizona, he is widely known as one of the best-selling authors in the field of psychology reaching more than two million students with his textbooks. Another contributing member of this collaboration is John O. Mitterer. Receiving his PhD in cognitive psychology from McMaster University, he has taught psychology at Brock University to more than 20,000 psychology students. Mitterer is a decorated veteran in his field receiving the 2003 Brock University Distinguished Teaching Award, a 2003 Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) Teaching Award, a 2004 3M Teaching Fellowship, and the 2005 Canadian Psychological Association Award for Distinguished Contributions to Education and Training in Psychology. Coon and Mitterer organize the concepts of Psychology: A Journey throughout 14 comprehensive chapters. These chapters present coverage of such topics as a search for understanding through the lens of psychology, brain and behavior, human development, sensation and perception, states of consciousness, conditioning and learning, as well as memory. Other topics presented include cognition, intelligence, and creativity, motivation and emotion, personality, health, stress, and coping, therapies, and finally, social behavior.
