This is the first in a series of books aiming to present key official documents and archive materials relevant to successive periods in the contemporary history of Oman and the southern states of the Arabian Gulf, drawing on sources available at British institutions such as the Public Record Office (PRO), and the India Office Library and Records (IOLR).In the 1950s, when this was first published, this book became a valuable source of information for the British government, fostering understanding of the region and thereby aiding British foreign policy and diplomacy in the area. In particular, the book offered an insight into the US outlook on this region, as presented by ARAMCO. The Foreign Office Research Department produced a confidential critique of work in 1954, which is included in the book. For today's reader this offers a unique insight into the social conditions, regional relations, and territorial claims through the first half of this century.
