The terrific writing trio of Richard Abcarian, Marvin Klotz, and Samuel Cohen provide students with an effective resource in their textbook Literature: The Human Experience: Reading and Writing, ISBN 9780312556440. This text sets out to help students connect with literature through the inclusion of engaging stories, poems, plays, and essays that investigate several classic themes- innocence and experience, conformity and rebellion, culture and identity, love and hate, and the presence of death. A fair mix of classical and contemporary literature is presented in this text with a strong emphasis on building connections, across time and cultures as well as between literature and real life. The leading voice on this team of experts is that of Richard Abcarian. Receiving his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, he is a professor of English emeritus at California State University, Northridge. During his teaching career, Abcarian won two Fulbright professorships. He has also served as editor of a critical edition of Richard Wright's A Native Son, as well as several other literature textbooks. The second contributing member of this trio is Marvin Klotz. Receiving his Ph.D. from New York University, he too is a professor of English emeritus at California State University, Northridge. Klotz is a highly awarded professional, receiving Northridge's distinguished teaching award in 1983, being awarded two Fulbright professorships (in Vietnam and Iran), and was a National Endowment for the Arts Summer Fellow twice. The third member of the collaborative efforts on Literature: The Human Experience: Reading and Writing is that of Samuel Cohen. He received his Ph.D. from the City University of New York and is currently serving as an assistant professor in the English Department at the University of Missouri where he won the 2008 Provost's Outstanding Junior Faculty Teaching Award.
