Linear Algebra and Its Applications (4th Edition), ISBN 9780321385178, is a modern introductory resource provided to college and university students by David C. Lay. Directed at students with two semesters of college-level mathematics experience, usually calculus, this text offers readers a concrete approach to the foundational concepts of linear algebra, including the more abstract and sometimes hard to grasp ones. Abstract concepts are introduced early on through concrete settings, developed progressively through the chapters then revisited repeatedly throughout the text to accommodate more thorough understanding and application. Various useful features and strategies are incorporated including examples, theorems and proofs, true/false questions, practice opportunities, as well as writing exercises. David C. Lay received his B.A. from Aurora University (Illinois), and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles. He has served as an educator and research mathematician since 1966, spending most of his time at the University of Maryland, College Park. Lay has also served as a visiting professor at the University of Amsterdam, the Free University in Amsterdam, and the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany. He is a seasoned writer with over 30 research articles published in functional analysis and linear algebra as well as several mathematics texts including Introduction to Functional Analysis, Calculus and Its Applications, and Linear Algebra Gems-Assets for Undergraduate Mathematics. Lay incorporates 7 comprehensive chapters in his book Linear Algebra and Its Applications (4th Edition). Chapter 1 begins this book with a chapter devoted to 'Linear Equations in Linear Algebra' followed by chapter 2 presenting information on 'Matrix Algebra.' Chapter 3 investigates 'Determinants' with chapter 4 examining 'Vector Spaces.' 'Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors' are discussed in chapter 5 followed by 'Orthogonality and Least-Squares' presented in chapter 6. This book is concluded with chapter 7 presenting information on 'Symmetric Matrices and Quadratic Forms.'
