Nivaldo J. Tro puts his experience and professional background to work to present college and university students a grand resource in his textbook Introductory Chemistry (4th Edition), ISBN 9780321687937. This book offers readers everything that they need to develop their problem-solving skills as well as the understanding of why the skills are so important. Taking the chemistry concepts from the laboratory to the real world, the book challenges students to learn by 'doing' through the application of applications. A user-friendly writing style offers a step-by-step approach to problem-solving through the inclusion of four steps in worked examples-sorting, strategizing, solving, and checking. Nivaldo J. Tro received his B.A degree in chemistry from Westmont College and earned his Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University. He later went on to the University of California at Berkeley where he did post-doctoral research on ultra-fast reaction dynamics in solution. Tro currently serves as chair of the department of chemistry at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, where he has been a faculty member since 1990. Since coming to Westmont, Professor Tro has been awarded various grants including those from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, from Research Corporation, and from the National Science Foundation. Tro chooses to organize the concepts in Introductory Chemistry (4th Edition) across 19 comprehensive chapters. This book begins with chapter 1 devoted to 'The Chemical World' followed by chapter 2 exploring 'Measurement and Problem Solving. Chapter 3 delves into 'Matter and Energy' with chapter 4 discussing 'Atoms and Elements.' 'Molecules and Compounds' are the topic of choice in chapter 5 followed by 'Chemical Composition' presented in chapter 6 and 'Chemical Reactions' the focus of chapter 7. Chapter 8 investigates 'Quantities in Chemical Reactions' followed by chapter 9 exploring 'Electrons in Atoms and the Periodic Table' and chapter 10 examining 'Chemical Bonding.' Chapter 11 presents coverage of 'Gases' with chapter 12 devoted to 'Liquids, Solids, and Intermolecular Forces' and chapter 13 focused on 'Solutions.' 'Acids and Bases' are the focus of chapter 14 followed by 'Chemical Equilibrium' discussed in chapter 15 and 'Oxidation and Reduction' presented in chapter 16. Chapter 17 delves into 'Radioactivity and Nuclear Chemistry' with chapter 18 exploring 'Organic Chemistry' and the book concluding with chapter 19 investigating 'Biochemistry.'
