Volumes II. and III., in theE nglish edition) the author has treated of Socrates, theS ocratics, and Plato, but has not been able to add an account of Plato spupils, including Aristotle and his successors. The space requisite for that purpose has been absorbed by the discussion of Plato sworks with a fulness which proved more and more absolutely necessary as the work progressed. The author was, indeed, convinced from the beginning that the extraction of a Platonic system from the philosophers writings was an impracticable task, and that any attempt in that direction could only yield an inadequate result.
