H. Stephen Stoker provides a grand resource for college and university students in his textbook General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, ISBN 9780547152813. This text incorporates concise descriptions, appealing and practical visual aids, as well as the most effective instructional pedagogy to provide students with strong foundational preparation. Whereas most textbooks incorporate an overwhelming amount of mathematical concepts, this text limits the amount included to the bare essentials so as to not confuse students. The genius behind this text, H. Stephen Stoker, currently teaches at Weber State University in Ogden, UT. There he has taught several introductory chemistry courses, with a specialty in general organic biology for 30 years. Stoker strategically organizes the wide-ranging concepts of General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry across three sections and 26 chapters. Each chapter includes various effective features for students' benefit including sections entitled 'Chemistry at a Glance' and 'Chemical Connections.' This text begins with part I devoting itself to concepts under the umbrella of 'General Chemistry.' A myriad of topics are covered including matter, pure substances and mixtures, elements and chemical formulas, measurement, periodic table, chemical bonding, molecules, intermolecular forces, chemical reactions, as well as acids and bases. Part II lends itself to concepts within the realm of 'Organic Chemistry.' These chapters offer coverage of organic and inorganic compounds, alkanes and cycloalkanes, hydrocarbons, chemical reactions of alcohols, aldehydes and ketones, and amines and amides. The final section, part III concludes with chapters devoted to 'Biological Chemistry.' Concepts discussed include carbohydrates, monosaccharides, triaglycerols, lipids, blood cholesterol levels, enzymes and vitamins, genetic engineering, and glucose metabolism.
