Essentials of Geology (11th Edition) - ISBN 9780321714725 is an excellent textbook for introductory-level science courses. This edition offers a new approach to help students understand geology, as it has been updated with new artwork and current case studies. Authors Frederick K. Lutgens, Edward J. Tarbuck, and Dennis Tasa start off with an introduction to geology then continue on to matter and minerals, igneous rocks and intrusive activity, volcanoes and volcanic hazards, weather and soils, and sedimentary rocks. The textbook covers metamorphism and metamorphic rocks, mass wasting through the work of gravity, running water, ground water, glaciers and glaciation, and desert and winds. Shore lines, earthquakes and the earth's interior, plate tectonics, origin and evolution of the ocean floor, and crustal deformation and mountain building are also discussed. The last portion of the book is devoted to the earth's evolution through geologic time and global climate change. Metric and English units, topographic maps, and landforms of the conterminous United States are provided in the appendices. The team of Lutgens, Tarbuck, and Tasa offers information in a straightforward manner; they keep the book readable by limiting technical language, yet do not compromise the high-quality of the text. To help students see the big picture, authors use a thematic approach. All the topics are linked to themes, namely ‘understanding the earth,' ‘people and the environment,', and ‘earth as a system'. This new edition presents geology in an interactive way. It comes with new supplements, including narrated tutorials, videos, photos, and animation. This edition has been updated sections on current issues like climate change. Thanks to its excellent art program and text, Essentials of Geology (11th Edition) continues to be one of the best textbooks for college introductory classes.
