Douglas J. Soccio uses an engaging style of writing in his textbook Archetypes of Wisdom: An Introduction to Philosophy, ISBN 9780495603825. This book, available for rental, integrates animated narratives, visually appealing graphics, as well as a comprehensible writing style to appeal to the learning needs of college and university students. A conversational style of writing is used to convey the foundational principles of philosophy and introduce readers to the lives and historical works of the most renowned philosophers of all time. This book presents writings from these philosophers coupled with commentary, biographical stories, as well as notes exploring the relationship between those historical ideas and that of the modern world. Chapters are strategically organized in a rough chronological order to present each thinker representative of the various philosophical movements. Douglas J. Soccio served as professor of philosophy at Shasta College from 1975 until 2001. He has authored several books including How to Get the Most out of Philosophy and Practical Logic and wrote a weekly philosophy column for the Redding Record Searchlight for three years. Soccio now writes on a full-time basis and is currently developing a collection of philosophical stories that express what he describes as philosophy with a heart, "a generous notion of philosophy that infuses all of his writing." Soccio organizes the concepts of Archetypes of Wisdom: An Introduction to Philosophy across 18 chapters divided into two sections. The book begins with a chapter devoted to 'Philosophy and the Search for Wisdom.' A section is then devoted to an 'Overview of Classical Themes' with writings from such philosophers as Confucius, Buddha, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and Thomas Aquinas. Another section provides readers with an 'Overview of Modern Themes.' These chapters present writings from the likes of Rene Descartes, Immanuel Kant, Karl Marx, and Ludwig Wittgenstein.
