Edward J. Tarbuck's Applications and Investigations in Earth Science, 7th Edition, ISBN 9780321689559 explores the framework and basic concepts of the Earth sciences through challenging students with the use of 23 hands-on laboratory exercises. These activities challenge the student to collect facts, examine information, and draw conclusions in a scientific manner which ultimately leads to higher levels of comprehension of concepts. Visibly appealing graphics as well as thorough incorporation of topics such as geology, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy are hailed by instructors and students alike. The consistency of the delivery of the investigations provide for seamless delivery. Each investigation follows the same format including a statement of purpose, objectives, list of materials needed, an introduction, questions and problems, investigations using the internet, a review, and finally, a summary or report page. Tarbucks strategically maps out the exercises in Applications and Investigations in Earth Science, 7th Edition across five sections. Part 1 focuses on exercises that will challenge students to experience the science of 'Geology.' These activities provide students the opportunity to explore minerals, the rock cycle, aerial photographs, satellite images, and topographic maps, a look at how running water and groundwater shape Earth's surface, arid and glacial landscapes, geologic time, maps, and structures, and lastly earthquakes and Earth's interior. Part 2 looks at 'Oceanography' with an introduction, a look at the ocean floor, as well as waves, currents, and tides. 'Meteorology' exercises comprise part 3 with activities devoted to Earth-sun relationships, heating the atmosphere, atmospheric moisture, pressure, and wind, air masses, the middle-latitude cyclone, weather maps, and global climates. Part 4 tackles the science of 'Astronomy' and focuses on exercises requiring students to look at astronomical observations, patterns in the solar system, locating the planets, examining terrestrial planets, and lastly, the moon and sun. The final section of the text, part 5 is entitled 'Earth Science Skills' and provides students two more exercises—one focusing on location and distance on Earth and the last on the metric system, measurements, and scientific inquiry.
