America: A Narrative History (Brief Eighth Edition) (Vol. 1), ISBN 9780393934090 has sold over 1.2 million copies over the past seven editions and is now in its twenty-fifth year of publication. George Brown Tindall and David E. Shi team up to offer this brief edition to college and university students, also available for rental. This book integrates an entertaining and easy-to-follow narrative style to present a combination of social and cultural history. Full-color graphics are boasted of this edition as well as a more concise format that lacks nothing in the area of thoroughness. The leading expert behind the work on America: A Narrative History (Brief Eighth Edition) (Vol. 1) is that of the late George Brown Tindall. His most recent faculty appointment was at the University of North Carolina where for many years he was recognized as one of the country's most distinguished professors of American history. Tindall was an established writer as well, authoring of several books including South Carolina Negros, 1877-1900, the award-winning The Emergence of the New South, 1913-1945, The Disruption of the Solid South, and, most recently, The Ethnic Southerners. The second contributor on this team is David E. Shi. Currently serving as president and professor of history at Furman University, he also previously served as the Frontis W. Johnston Professor of History at Davidson College for more than a decade. He too has plenty of writing experience with four books focusing on American cultural history including Matthew Josephson, Bourgeois Bohemian, The Simple Life: Plain Living and High Thinking in American Culture, In Search of the Simple Life: American Voices, Past and Present, and, most recently, Facing Facts: Realism in American Thought and Culture.
