Warren Matthews' World Religions, 6th Edition, ISBN 9780495603856 addresses the many challenges faced by individuals living in a world full of vastly different religions. The diverse beliefs, traditions, and doctrines of each religion are comparatively analyzed through research and material devoted to historical and worldview principles. Matthews strives to respectfully provide an impartial presentation of each world religion through the personal testaments of devoted followers. He incorporates the hallowed traditions and histories of each for reader understanding. Matthews proves thorough in his studies and presentation of world religions in this text. He covers a plethora of the most widely known religions and presents them in an easy-to-understand, yet detailed manner. The first section of the book is devoted to 'Religions of Tribes and City-States' which includes the religions of America and Africa. Section II focuses on 'Religions Arising in India' and dedicates time to addressing Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. A section entitled 'Religions of China and Japan' includes in-depth information about the widely-practiced Daoism, Confucianism, and Shinto. Within the chapters of section IV, 'Religions That Influenced East and West,' Matthew tackles the subject of religions of Iraq and Iran including the ancient Mesopotamian Religion and Zoroastrianism. The last section is devoted to the vast 'Religions of the Family of Abraham.' This section presents information and history of the ever-popular Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. It also addresses 'New Forms of Older Religions' and draws to a close by discussing globalization and world religion. This most recent 6th Edition of Matthews' World Religions boasts 'new features that help readers learn more in a shorter time.' Features include learning objectives stated at the beginning of each chapter as well as 'Questions for Review' and 'Questions for Discussion' to gauge if the objectives have been met. The 'Suggested Readings' section has also been updated to included recently published books. The last two chapters of the book, 'New Forms of Older Religions' and 'Globalization and World Religion' have also been added to provide more current information on older religions as well as to address the challenges that globalization has placed on world religions.
