John Chaffee's Thinking Critically, ISBN 9780495908814 focuses on the foundational thinking, reasoning, reading, and writing skills that students must master to be successful in the classroom as well as their professional careers. A highly useful resource for both teacher and student, this text skillfully organizes each chapter to include useful features such as an overview of a specific aspect of critical thinking, application activities, discussion topics, and writing assignments—all designed to accommodate manipulation and application of concepts taught. The brains behind this wonderful resource, John Chaffee, is a seasoned educator, writer, and speaker. Holding his doctorate degree, he currently serves as a professor of philosophy at The City University of New York. It is here where he has developed a Philosophy and Critical Thinking program that annually involves 25 faculty and 3,000 students. Chaffee has published numerous textbooks and professional articles as well as conducted several presentations and workshops across the nation. Chaffee strategically organizes the concepts within Thinking Critically across 12 chapters. Chapter 1 begins with an introduction to 'Thinking' followed by chapter 2 that moves into 'Thinking Critically.' Chapter 3 investigates 'Solving Problems' while chapter 4 examines 'Perceiving and Believing.' 'Constructing Knowledge' is the topic of choice in chapter 5 followed by 'Language and Thought' in chapter 6 and 'Forming and Applying Concepts' is the focus of chapter 7. Chapter 8 looks at 'Relating and Organizing' while chapter 9 delves into 'Thinking Critically About Moral Issues' and chapter 10 discusses 'Constructing Arguments.' The book is concluded with chapter 11 looking 'Reasoning Critically' and finally, chapter 12 presenting 'Thinking Critically, Living Creatively.'
