A must-read for psychology majors, Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy is a case study–based book that presents major theories and essential principles of counseling at work. Gerald Corey divided this thorough textbook into 16 chapters, the first three of which discuss psychotherapy and counseling as a practice, how the counselor acts as person and as a professional, and some ethical issues about the field. The succeeding chapters are all about the most common and most important therapeutic approaches used in counseling, each referenced to the case of the client Stan, which Corey uses to illustrate the theories in a practical 'manner. A DVD extension (called Theory in Practice: The Case of Stan) is also available to help students develop a more through understanding of the concepts as they are applied in real life. Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy (ISBN 9780495102083) discusses one theory per chapter, from text-book basic therapies (including psychoanalytic, Gestalt, and Alderian therapies) to more innovative integrative perspectives. The author concludes with integrative approaches to working with patients. The "At a Glance" portions lay down the distinction of each theory in terms of their restrictions, focus, and fundamental principles. An e-book version is also available for those who prefer electronic media. The author, Gerald Corey, is a professor of human services at the California State University, a licensed psychologist, a diplomate in counseling psychology. He is affiliated with a long list of reputed psychological associations in the country, and has also co-authored or authored at least 15 counseling textbooks and countless journals.
