Now in stock for $40.00. The U.S.S.R.-German Aggression Against Lithuania: A Documentary History 1939-1945 is the definitive scholarly reference work on the Soviet invasion of Lithuania in 1940, the German invasion of Lithuania in 1941, and the Soviet invasion of Lithuania again in 1944. Edited by noted Lithuanian Professor Bronis J. Kaslas, this book provides encyclopedic historical documentation that helped lead to the restoration of Lithuania's independence within the peaceful implosion of the Soviet Union and dissolution of the Soviet colonial empire. This volume is invaluable in proving through official documents the crimes in International Law committed against Lithuania by the Soviet Communists and Nazi Germans from 1939-1945. Lithuania is now an ally of the United States in NATO and a member of the European Union. The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science described this classic book as "A well organized and documented reference work. Highly recommended." In its review, Lituanus, Lithuanian Quarterly Journal of Arts and Sciences, emphasized the importance of this book in International Law: "...the selection of documents was guided by one principal objective: to present material, showing the applicability of the principle of non-recognition of the use of force and conquest in international relations (the Stimson doctrine) in the case of Lithuania. The collection, therefore, emphasizes the legal aspects of Soviet-Lithuanian relations, the Nazi-Soviet conspiracy of August 1939 and its results, and the international law consequences of non-recognition of Soviet aggression against Lithuania by the United States and other Western powers." The American Journal of International Law described the book: "The volume is a collection of documents. Those concerning Russo-Llthuanian relations, culminating in the Soviet annexation of Lithuania, are generally known. What is less known is the documentation pertaining to the period of the German occupation..." Professor Bronis J. Kaslas, Ph.D. (1910-1996) was a distinguished Lithuanian scholar and journalist, educated at the University of Vytautas the Great in Kaunas, Lithuania and at the University of Strasbourg and the Sorbonne in France. In exile, he was Professor and Chairman of the History Department at Wilkes College Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania for many years, where he lectured in History and International Law.
