THE SHANG PIRATE LEGACY This is a fact-based work of fi ction. It is based on many actual facts and truths that exist in the multi-ethnic world of organized crime both now as well as hundreds of years ago. It specifi cally addresses the Chinese part of that world: the Triads. It covers not only 20th and 21st century triad activities but, also covers their crimes during the 18th and 19th centuries; when triads were pirates. And it is the fi rst book ever written about the Chinese Junk pirate ship: Ning Po. The story also touches upon another criminal group based near mainland China but, whose roots are now entrenched in almost every country: The Russian Mafi ya. Facts in this story are taken from personal fi rsthand knowledge that I've acquired over a thirty year span. What they relate to and what methods were used for my research are gone into in my "Author's Note" herein. During my law enforcement days as a Chicago Police Offi cer in the 1970s, I frequented Chicago's Chinatown: the mysterious shops, sinister nightclubs and illegal gambling dens run by the triad gangs there. Even though I was an "outsider"; people there could sense that I was a "real player." And those who knew or could sense that I was a cop; weren't bothered by it. They sensed that I was a wild cop that liked the "hard, sharp edge": different from all of the others they had encountered. And because of that, I, an outsider, was welcomed and made privy to facts by insiders in the Chinese underworld that nobody else but the insiders knew; "the real ways." The Chinese Junk Ning Po referred to in the story was a real ship-a real Pirate Ship. The island of Cheung Chau, the location of the headquarters of the fi ctionalYellow Dragon Ning Po Triad in this story, is, in reality; an island with a pirate and smuggling history dating back 2500 years. And that "industry" became very active in the 16th century. Some details in this story regarding the Ning Po and other pirate exploits in the China Seas are historical, and some are not. And some are true facts I uncovered through lengthy investigation and comparison studies; facts that have never before been known about the Ning Po. Some of those facts are buried inside the story as deeply as some of the Ning Po's victims are in the South China Sea. Remember: this is a work of fi ction. But then; some are not. If one reads carefully, one will realize the truth in certain events and exploits about the ship and make discoveries about the ship and its crew and realize that these could be nothing but facts. Again: see my "Author's Note."The triad ceremony in the story is based on an authentic one. Source: Chinatown nights and decades of socializing with Asian "Gangster Bosses and Players"-both male and female. As most people know, China has given the world culture, art, cuisine and the people there were utilizing things of their own invention-many of which are still in use today-while Europe was still in the Dark Ages. This story is about a small group from that country, a group that certainly does not represent the Chinese Race. This group is in fact contrary in their way of life to the very essence of the Chinese culture. And most certainly, the purpose of this novel is not to say that race has anything to do with criminal behavior. On the contrary, it is criminal behavior that touches every race. To deny that there exists in the world today the Italian Mob, Colombian Drug Cartels, the Mexican Mafi a, Jamaican Drug lords, the British Underworld, the Japanese Yakuza, Australian Gangsters, the French Underworld, Middle Eastern Terrorists, Irish Terrorist Groups, German Criminal Gangs, or the Russian Mafi ya as well as a host of other ethnic criminal groups with few races or nationalities not represented today as well as throughout history is to deny reality. The Chinese Triads have long been a part of this reality. In fact, as a strictly criminal organization, the triads are the oldest; they are the real originals: "the fir
