Nellie Y. McKay's The Norton Anthology of African American Literature, ISBN 9780393977783 now in its 2nd Edition, has taken nearly 10 years to perfect. This text has been adopted by over 1,275 colleges and universities across the globe and has been praised as 'brilliant, definitive, and a joy to teach from.' The text is organized in chronological order which provides seamless transitions through the six periods of black history which explored within its pages. These periods include slavery and freedom, Reconstruction, the Harlem Renaissance, Realism, Naturalism and Modernism, the Black Arts Movement and the period since the 1970s. The text begins with an introduction to the traditions of spirituals, gospels, and blues then moves into work songs, jazz, and rap. Also included are sermons and folktales with the inclusion of letters and journals, poetry, short fiction, novels, autobiography, and drama. Well-organized sections throughout the book use the consistent format of including an introductory essay as well as a brief biographical essay for each writer. The Norton Anthology of African American Literature is a wonderful display of the talent and expertise of Nellie Y. McKay. Receiving her doctorate from Harvard, she is a Professor of American and Afro-American Literature at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She is also a seasoned veteran in the writing world serving as the associate editor of the African American Review and author of Jean Toomer—the Artist: A Study of His Literary Life and Work, 1894–1936. She has also served as editor of Critical Essays on Toni Morrison and co-editor of the Norton Critical Edition of Harriet Jacobs's Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Beloved—A Casebook, and Approaches to Teaching the Novels of Toni Morrison.
