This classic work contains the first translation of two rare Syriac manuscripts whose existence was first made public in 1897, along with a third manuscript included for comparison. The texts are of a mystical nature, combining Syriac, Arabic, and other elements, along with magical names and numbers and references to figures such as King Solomon and the "great Angels," and objects like Solomon's seal, associated with the history of magic generally. The writings, which consist of charms, prayers and talismans, are of several kinds. Ancient magical elements mixed in with figures known to the Koran, Bible and Talmud give insight into the magical roots of religious practice and belief. In all, the book contains ninety-five charms. The texts are presented in English translation, along with facsimiles of the original Syriac texts and 16 illustrations from the original manuscripts.
