Stephen E. Lucas presents college and university students with a useful introductory resource in his textbook, The Art of Public Speaking, 10th Edition, ISBN 9780073385150. This text focuses on the goal of preparing students to become more competent, conscientious speakers and thinkers through the inclusion of relatable public speaking skills as well as classical and modern theories. A myriad of effective resources are boasted in this text which help students internalize the foundational concepts of public speaking, build confidence through speech practice, as well as prepare for success in the classroom and beyond. Stephen E. Lucas received his master's and doctorate degrees from Penn State University. He currently serves as Professor of Communication Arts and Evjue-Bascom Professor in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he has taught since 1972. Lucas has received numerous teaching awards including the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching at the University of Wisconsin and the National Communication Association's Donald Ecroyd Award for Outstanding Teaching in Higher Education. He is also an award-winning writer with his first book, Portents of Rebellion: Rhetoric and Revolution in Philadelphia, 1765-1776, receiving the Golden Anniversary Award of the National Communication Association in 1977 and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Lucas organizes the contents of The Art of Public Speaking, 10th Edition across five sections and 18 chapters. Part 1 presents readers with an introduction to 'Speaking and Listening' followed by part 2 discussing 'Speech Preparation: Getting Started.' Part 3 investigates 'Speech Preparation: Organizing and Outlining' with part 4 providing strategies for 'Presenting the Speech.' The final section of this book is part 5 devoted to 'Varieties of Public Speaking.'
