The expanded third edition of Charles Tilly s 2004 book Social Movements 1768 2004 provides a short and accessible history of the social movement as a way for ordinary people to challenge authorities. Tilly and Wood show how the familiar sight of organizations marching and rallying in order to shape their world emerged through struggle with the development of the modern capitalist European state, and through colonialism s spread throughout the globe. They argue that the tactics and strategies movements use are tied to the ways political, social, and economic systems organize social life and examine twentieth-century movements to explore why and how movements operate differently in different contexts. Tracing the evolution of the social movement in the 21st century, they look closely at recent struggles in the United States, Canada, North Africa, China, and Europe and ask how increasing inequalities and access to new technologies are creating new challenges for social movements and for democracy.
