"Solid, scholarly and informative." -- The Toronto StarJean Pierre Lefebvre is as innovative a filmmaker in his own culture as Jean-Luc Godard is in his. From the '60s to the '80s, his films confirmed the sense of an emerging national cinema in Quebec and were much celebrated at international film festivals. Lefebvre's Il ne faut pas mourir pour a (1966) was the first Canadian film ever shown at Cannes; Les Dernières Fianailles (1973) won the top European Catholic Prize in 1974; and Les Fleurs sauvages (1982) received the International Critics' Prize at the Cannes film festival in 1983. More recently, Lefebvre has explored the creative potential of video as a visual medium. In Jean Pierre Lefebvre: Vidéaste, Peter Harcourt provides an overview of Lefebvre's films and an incisive consideration of his five-part video project L'Âge des images (1993--95). Two essays by Lefebvre and a recent interview with him round out this timely look at a director of great distinction and emotive power.
