Michael Sullivan's Intermediate Algebra, 2nd Edition, ISBN 9780321567529 is not your typical math textbook. This resource focuses on challenging students to experience math concepts outside of the classroom. This is accomplished through the strategic organization of this text that demonstrates methods used within a classroom as well as the inclusion of several effectively designed text features and application opportunities. Examples included within the text are accompanied by annotations that act as the teacher walking students through each step of the problem-solving process. Additional features include 'Quick Checks' which begin each exercise set, 'Do the Math' workbooks, and the MyMathLab interactive component which provides added warm-up exercises, guided practice examples, and additional 'Do the Math' practice exercises. Sullivan, currently serving as a professor of Mathematics at Joliet Junior College holds graduate degrees in both mathematics and economics from DePaul University. Outside of authoring Intermediate Algebra, 2nd Edition, he has also authored and co-authored more than 20 books including a statistics book and a developmental mathematics series. Sullivan strategically organizes this text into three sections, including an introductory section dealing with 'Real Numbers and Algrebraic Expressions.' The actual titled Part I of the text delves into concepts surrounding 'Linear Equations and Inequalities in One Variable.' Several principles are covered in this section including an introduction to problem solving, using formulas to problem solve, and linear inequalities in one variable problems. Part II contains is much more involved including a myriad of concepts that fall under the category of 'Linear Equations and Inequalities in Two Variables.' Topics covered in this comprehensive section include relations, functions, and more inequalities, systems of linear equations and inequalities, polynomial and polynomial functions, rational expressions and functions, radicals and rational exponents, quadratic equations and functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, conics, and finally, sequences, series, and the binomial theorem.
