Gail Dines' Gender, Race, and Class in Media: A Critical Reader, ISBN 9781412974417 tackles various issues surrounding the presentation of information and products through media. This book was designed with a three-part purpose in mind: to introduce the most powerful theoretical concepts in contemporary media studies; to explore some of the most influential and interesting forms of contemporary media culture; and lastly, to focus on issues of gender, sexuality, race, and class from a critical perspective. This resource challenges students to critically investigate the media with which they already interact and to explore multiple proposed issues that arise within media presentation. This author's zest for media issues, particularly that of pornography, has fueled her fire for the inclusion of certain materials in Gender, Race, and Class in Media: A Critical Reader. Gail Dines, a professor of Sociology and Women's Studies at Wheelock College in Boston also serves as the chair of the American Studies department. She has devoted over twenty years to researching and writing about the negative impacts of pornography and its portrayal in the media realm. She has written numerous articles on the subject of pornography, media images of women and representations of race in pop culture. She has recently published a book entitled Pornland: How Pornography has Hijacked our Sexuality. She is also cofounder of an activist group called 'Stop Porn Culture!' The chapters within this text cover a gamut of topics in regards to media, particularly controversial issues either depicted in or attributed to media sources. Such issues of feminism, the portrayal of the American family, homosexuality, persuasive advertising, as well as cultural subjects are tackled in this riveting resource.
