The expansive collaborative efforts of Nancy R. Comley, David Hamilton, Carl H. Klaus, Robert Scholes, Nancy Sommers, and Jason Tougaw proves to be a huge success in their textbook Fields of Reading: Motives for Writing, ISBN 9780312553746. This resource delves into each of the major facets of this curriculum including arts and humanities, social sciences and public affairs, as well as sciences and presents students with expert writing samples from these domains. Reading selections range from individual essays to paired texts to casebooks which contain several readings on one intriguing topic. The lady leading this panel of experts is that of Nancy R. Comley. Currently serving as Professor and Chair of the English Department at Queens College, City University of New York, she had co-edited works such as The Practice of Writing and Text Book and has co-authored Hemingway's Genders. Comley has also directed the writing program at the University of Oklahoma. Fields of Reading: Motives for Writing is succinctly organized across four parts presenting a myriad of concepts. The book begins with an 'Introduction' as well as a section entitled 'Reflecting, Reporting, Explaining, Arguing: The Motives Explained.' The formal sections of the book then get underway with part 1 devoted to the discipline of 'Arts and Humanites' containing writings from such great writers as Frederick Douglass, George Orwell, Amy Tan, and Paul Bloom. Part 2 presents selections from 'Social Sciences and Public Affairs' including the renowned work of Olivia Judson, Thomas Jefferson, Charles Siebert, and Martin Luther King, Jr. 'Sciences' are represented in part 3 with passages taken from Lewis Thomas, Jonah Lehrer, Diane Ackerman, and Emily Martin. The final section of this text is that of part 4 devoted to 'Casebooks.' These are centered around writings from Clive Thompson, Marshall Poe, Mike Rose, and Oliver Sacks.
