The husband and wife authoring team of Barbara M. Newman and Philip R. Newman utilize a sequential presentation in their book Development Through Life: A Psychosocial Approach, ISBN 9781111344665. Through the integration of psychological theory taken from Erik Erikson, this textbook builds on foundational principles to present information on physical, intellectual, social, and emotional growth in all life stages. An emphasis is placed on the theory that development results from the interdependence of these areas at every life stage as well as a focus on optimal development through life. The first half of this dynamic due is Barbara M. Newman who received her doctorate for the University of Michigan. She currently serves as a professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Rhode Island but has also held teaching positions as at Russell Sage College and The Ohio State University, where she served as department chair in Human Development and Family Science and as associate provost for Faculty Recruitment and Development. Newman just completed a year-long sabbatical with the Department of Psychology and the Center for Culture, Brain and Development at UCLA. The final piece to the authoring expertise behind Development Through Life: A Psychosocial Approach is Philip R. Newman. Also receiving a doctorate from the University of Michigan, he too just completed a year-long sabbatical at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he was associated with the Psychology Department and the Center for Culture, Brain and Development. Newman has taught several courses in introductory psychology, adolescence, social psychology, developmental psychology, counseling, and family, school, and community contexts for development. He has also served as the director for Research and Evaluation of the Young Scholars Program at The Ohio State University and as the director of the Human Behavior Curriculum Project for the American Psychological Association and is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI), and the American Orthopsychiatric Association.
