Cradle cap is essentially a condition that is most common in young infants. This condition usually appears on a baby’s head, eyebrows or eyelids as early as between one to three months. It usually goes away on its own by the time the child gets to between a year and twenty four months. However, there has been known cases of both teenagers and adults who have had issues with cradle cap. This is usually a mild condition but there have been issues with fungal infections in some people with cradle cap. There are a number treatment options for cradle cap such as olive oil, shampoos, baking soda pastes and some prescribed medications for the more severe types of the condition. When the oil is used on the affected area or areas, it is usually left on for a short period of time, usually between ten and fifteen minutes and then a soft brush or fine teeth comb is used to remove the scales from the scalp and then a gentle baby shampoo is used to wash both the remaining scales as well as the oil from the baby’s head. Albeit the condition is so common, its cause or causes are not really known, but it has been linked with the baby having some of its mother’s hormone still left in his or her body shortly after their birth. The appearance of cradle cap is well known with its scaly, patchy look that is sometimes red, yellow or brown in color.
