Some of the main topics covered in the book include the basics of interpersonal communication, identity, perception, emotion, language (barriers and bridges), and nonverbal communication. Adler and Proctor also focus on listening, communication and relational dynamics, intimacy and distance in real communication, improving communication climates, and managing interpersonal conflicts. Lead author Ronald B. Adler teaches interpersonal communication a well as communication theories and professional and business communication at Santa Barbara Community College, where he is also a professor emeritus.
