Pupil of Severini Holman-B lack was yet very youn: when he went to New York to enroll as a pupil of Severini, with whom, hefore lone, he came to Europe and made a concert tour of several countries. Return ing to New York he resumed his studies, singing, meanwhile, in St.G eorgeâs Episcopal church. Shortly after that he took up grand opera and passed three years in travel in the United States, singing thirtytwo roles. But this life was not to his liking, and he retired from the operatic stage never to return. In 1883 he came to Paris to pass the summer with his brother who had preceded him a few years and was a student in the Ecole de Eeaux A rts., He was fortunate in meeting the master Faure soon after his arrival, and in winning his friendship. Xe hecame a pupil of this great teacher and the sojourn, which was intended to last three months, was extended into a residence ofour years. In the year after his arrival he was admitted to the conservatory where he received instruction from Duverncy. Eventually Ho Iman Elack determined to make his permanent hone in Paris. Holman-B lack has sung in concert with Saint Saens,;assenet, Faure, Paderewski, Carlotta, Patti, De Pachman,W idor and other illustrious artists.
